Washington Junior High Chess Club compete in State Chess Tournament

Washington Junior High Students attended the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) State Chess Tournament on February 22 & 23 at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria Illinois. According to the IESA web site, over 600 students representing 59 member schools participated in the chess competition.
 
After several rounds, WJHS 8th grader Niyitunga Jeanvier medaled and received third place (bronze) overall. Other student State Qualifiers were 8th graders Trent Lierly, Nathan Hendrickx, D'Marious Johnson and 7th grader Dah Htoo.
 
According to Chess Club Advisor Marc Nesseler, WJHS finished as an 8th grade team in a tie for 24th out of 53 teams. "We were the highest finishing 4-chessman team and averaged 3.75 wins per chessman, which was the 3rd best in the state."
