The 2021 River Bend Food Bank Student Hunger Drive has wrapped up and Rock Island High School/Thurgood Marshall Learning Center had a successful campaign!

 

Every year Quad-City high schools compete for six weeks to see who can collect the most food for the River Bend Food Bank.

 

Drum roll...22,815 pounds were collected! That's a new record for the schools. This amounts to 13.33 pounds per student. Our students, teachers, administrators, and community have provided 30.061 meals to families in need! In 2020, Rocky and Thurgood collected 15,002 pounds. 

 

Rocky and Thurgood's student council didn't raise all that by themselves. Schools in the RIMSD#41 held their own campaigns to collect food to go towards the campaign. Eugene Field Elementary School collected more than 12,000 cans and donated $1,700 towards the campaign. The school offered different incentives for students for each goal they reached. When the school reached 8,000 Prinicipal Weiss agreed to dress up in a blowup sumo wrestling costume during cross-walk duty. 

 

Rocky held different events, including a powderpuff football game where people good drop off donations or donate canned food items as their admission to the game.
