Summer Reading Challenges ROCK

The Rock Island-Milan School District is partnering with the Rock Island Public Library, Martin Luther King Jr. Center, Spring Forward Learning Center and the Bi-State Literacy on a reading campaign for the summer called #RocktownReads -! We want to see what everyone is reading - so grab a book and take a photo of yourself reading! There will be weekly prizes and a grand prize of pizza for a year! Get the details and start reading >>

Students can find plenty of books to read this summer by visiting one of the Little Free Libraries at one of the RIMSD #41 elementary schools!

The Rock Island Public Library is hosting the Rockin' Summer Kickoff on May 31, 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Rock Island Downtown Library. The event is FREE and is going to launch the Libraries Rock summer reading challenge from June 1 to July 21.

Finally, THE GREAT AMERICAN READ is an eight-part series that explores and celebrates the power of reading, told through the prism of America's 100 best-loved novels (as chosen in a national survey). It investigates how and why writers create their fictional worlds, how we as readers are affected by these stories, and what these 100 different books have to say about our diverse nation and our shared human experience.

On the website (http://www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read/home/), you can see the list of books, take a quiz to see how many you've read, print out a checklist of the 100 novels, join the Facebook Book Club, watch the launch special (it just aired this week), share how your favorite book has impacted you, and vote for your favorites from the list of 100.
